The method involves evaluating a current value (4) representing a mass (M) of soot contained in a particle filter of a spark ignition engine during regeneration of the filter. A control signal for controlling implementation of the regeneration of the filter is generated, when the mass of soot is higher than a predetermined mass. Another control signal (1) for controlling stopping of the regeneration of the filter is generated using the value, when the mass increases or after expiration of a predetermined time (X) that is counted from the time of generation of the former control signal. An independent claim is also included for a device for generating a stop control signal that controls stopping of regeneration of a particle filter.
