The present invention describes a process for the hydrogenation of an aromatic charge using, as a catalyst composition, a suspension of medium-sized metal nanoparticles between 1 and 20 nanometers in at least one non-aqueous ionic liquid, said suspension also containing at least minus a nitrogen ligand, wherein said metal nanoparticles comprise a transition metal in the zero valence state, the transition metal being selected from groups 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the periodic table and wherein said nitrogen ligand comprises 1 to n nitrogen atoms, n being an integer of 1 to 20.
