Preparing composite comprising nanofibers or nanotubes on a porous silicon carbide substrate, comprises: incorporating a catalyst for growth of nanotubes or nanofibers, in porous silicon carbide substrate, or in silicon carbide precursor; growing nanotubes or carbon nanofibers from a mixture comprising a hydrocarbon and hydrogen; and optionally transforming the nanotubes or carbon nanofibers into silicon carbide nanofibers. An independent claim is included for a composite comprising porous silicon carbide substrate with carbon nanotubes or nanofibers and/or silicon carbide nanofibers, preferably a foamy substrate of beta -silicon carbide with a specific surface of at least 10 m 2/ g with silicon carbide nanofibers.
