Mobile device which can sense its present situation

A mobile device which uses sensor components such as cameras and microphones, to perform a determination as to the present situation of the device. In one embodiment a camera mounted on the mobile device is able to capture images of the surroundings of the device, and processing of those images then undertaken to determine a present situation of the device. A sound signal captured by a microphone can be processed to provide an estimate of the device's present situation. A stimulus signal for measurement by the sensor can be provided, and this again is preferably provided by a component which is typically standard in such a device. For example, the mobile device screen can be caused to light, to attempt to light up the device's present surroundings. The mobile device ringer volume may be changed, or the magnitude or frequency of vibration of the device vibrator altered.
