PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polycrystalline mesocarbon microsphere-graphitized article enabling production of a lithium ion secondary battery which has high charge or discharge capacity per volume, preferable discharge load characteristics and charge (cycle) characteristics when it is used as a negative electrode material, and has less (dis)charge loss and preferable (dis)charge efficiency, and also to provide a negative electrode active substance using the same, and the lithium ion secondary battery using the negative electrode active substance. PSOLUTION: There are provided: the polycrystalline mesocarbon microsphere-graphitized article having a plurality of crystals and an average particle diameter of 1-120 m, with the C axis direction of each crystal being in random directions; the negative electrode active substance using the above article; and the lithium ion secondary battery using the above substance.
