PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a light shielding member which can produce a light shielding material provided with a metal particle-containing film having excellent adhesion with a base material and optical solidity, and having excellent surface hardness and light shieldability to various wavelengths by a simple process. PSOLUTION: The method for producing a light shielding material comprises: a stage (a) where the surface of a base material capable of generating radicals by exposure is brought into contact with a compound having an unsaturated part capable of radical polymerization and a part adsorbing a meal ion or a metal salt, and thereafter, exposure is performed, thus a directly bonded polymer is produced on the base material, so as to form a polymer layer; a stage (b) where a metal ion or a metal salt is imparted to the polymer layer; a stage (c) where the metal ion or a metal ion in the metal salt is reduced, so as to precipitate metal particles; and a stage (d) where, after the metal particles are precipitated, a monovalent metal salt structure in the polymer composing the polymer layer is subjected to one selected from the group consisting of polyvalent metal crosslinking treatment, chemical modification and acid treatment.
