PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a staple fiber for nonwoven fabrics, which is composed of a polyester having excellent crystallinity regardless of low melting point, producible in high operationality by conventional production facilities, suitable for dry or wet nonwoven fabric use as well as air laid process, processable at a low temperature in heat-welding and giving a nonwoven fabric having small thermal shrinkage and high dimensional stability, and to provide a staple fiber nonwoven fabric produced by using the staple fiber for nonwoven fabrics.;SOLUTION: The staple fiber for nonwoven fabrics is formed of a dicarboxylic acid component composed mainly of terephthalic acid and a diol component containing 50 mol% or more of 1,6-hexanediol, has a melting point (Tm) of 100-150°C, contains 0.01-5.0 mass% crystal nucleating agent and gives a DSC curve representing the temperature lowering crystallization determined by DSC satisfying formula (1): b/a≥0.05 (mW/mg×°C).
