PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handing tool and a method of a chip-type electronic component which has positioning reference holes hardly abraded, accurately positions the chip-type electronic component, and also positions it by an image processing.;SOLUTION: A retainer tool 1 for forming an external electrode is provided with a frame body 2, a plurality of cavities 5 for inserting and retaining the chip-type electronic component, and a pair of positioning reference holes 8. The frame body 2 is provided with a plurality of rectangular cavity formation holes 3 vertically and horizontally disposed into a grid shape and the circular holes 4 for forming the positioning reference holes. An elastic material 14 is molded inside the cavity formation hole 3. The hole 4 for forming the positioning reference hole is disposed with a washer 7 in its central part and molded with the elastic material 14 between the inner wall surface of the hole 4 for forming the positioning reference hole and the outer circumferential surface of the washer 7.
