PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous metal type catalyst used in a reforming vessel for reforming a hydrocarbon gas, e.g. hydrogen gas, natural gas, methanol and/or coal gas, to a gas rich in hydrogen and carbon monoxide by steam reforming and a supporting material for manufacture of the catalyst. PSOLUTION: In the catalyst-supporting material, the metal backbone of the porous metal having a three-dimensional net structure is coated with -alumina having spacings dSB2/SBand dSB1/SBof the (040) face of the crystal, determined from positions of the half band width of the diffraction peaks of the (040) face, within a range of 1.920-2.035 and spacings dSB2/SBand dSB1/SBof the (046) face, determined from positions of the half band width of the X-ray diffraction peaks of the (046) face, within a range of 1.360-1.425.
