PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head wherein near-field light generated from a near-field light generation means sufficiently reaches a recording layer part of a recording medium, and the coercive force of the recording layer part is sufficiently reduced during writing.;SOLUTION: This thin-film magnetic head is provided with a substrate having a medium facing surface and an element forming surface vertical to the medium facing surface, an electromagnetic coil element formed in the element forming surface and used for writing, a near-field light generation layer for heating the writing part of a magnetic recording medium when near-field light is generated to execute writing, and a cover layer formed on the element forming surface so as to cover the electromagnetic coil element and the near-field light generation layer. The near-field light generation layer has a shape tapered toward the head end surface of the medium facing surface side, and is provided with a near-field light generation part including a tip reaching this head end surface. Further, a thermal expansion projected layer made of a material having a thermal expansion coefficient higher than that of a material of the cover layer is disposed near the near-field light generation part.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
