METHODS TO TREAT A MAMMALIAN PATIENT HAVING INFLAMMATION OF ORAL TISSUE, AND TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION OF ORAL TISSUE IN A MAMMIFEROUS PATIENT. A method for treating a mammal having oral tissue inflammation is provided, wherein the inflamed oral tissue is contacted with an effective, safe, non-irritating oral composition having an anti-inflammatory agent comprising a magnolia extract. The anti-inflammatory active ingredient of magnolia reduces one or more inflammation mediators and reduces inflammation in the oral tissue. The oral composition may be in the form of a mouthwash solution; dentifrice, including toothpastes, gels, powders, tablets, medicated gel; animal products; and the like.
