The present invention discloses a process for the preparation of salts of 2-[2-(4-dibenzo[b,f][l,4]thiazepin-11-yl-1- piperazinyl)ethoxy]ethanol (quetiapine) from the quetiapine base and the corresponding acid, wherein the salt is precipitated from a mixture of solvents, which is either a mixture of methylbenzene and dimethyl ketone or ethyl-acetate, or a mixture of methylbenzene, water and dimethyl ketone or ethyl-acetate.
