The invention relates to genetically modified TGB-3 viral sequences suitable for the induction of gene silencing. In particular, it has been proven that hairpin constructs based on such sequences are highly effective in inducing the mechanism of PTHS (post-transcriptional gene silencing) and, thus, the destruction of all RNA2. Accordingly, when the plants are transformed, the spread of the virus in the plant is significantly reduced or blocked. The invention relates to hairpin structures, their use, as well as to plants, plant cells and plant tissues bearing these structures.
