The method involves requesting a parking transaction, and transferring user identification data to determine the cost of parking a vehicle (13). A determination is made whether the user identification data is associated with vehicle registration data stored in a central database (5). The parking transaction is terminated, when the user identification data is not associated with the vehicle registration data, and the cost of parking the vehicle is determined, when the user identification data is associated with the vehicle registration data. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a parking system comprising a transaction device (2) a parking meter for use in a method for calculating cost of parking a vehicle.
