Animal model for perimenopause and menopause and methods of inducing ovarian failure

Provided is a mammalian non-human female animal having at least a partial depletion of ovarian primordial follicles and at least one characteristic of perimenopause and/or menopause induced by administration of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of4-vinylcyclohexene-l, 2-epoxide and 4-vinylcyclohexene-7, 8-epoxide. Also provided are a method of preparing such animals and a method of screening agents affecting ovarian primordial follicles and characteristics of perimenopause and/or menopause.
