An isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a polypeptide or fragment thereof having activity of catalyzing the formation of a double bond, wherein said nucleic acid molecule or a fragment thereof comprises: a. the nucleotide sequence as forth in SEQ ID NO: 7 or complement thereof; b. a nucleotide sequence which is at least 65% identical to the entire nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 7, or a complement thereof; c. a nucleotide sequence comprising a fragment of at least 40 consecutive nucleotides in length of the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 7, or a complement thereof; d. a nucleotide sequence having at least 50-100 or more nucleotides in length and hybridizes under stringent conditions to a complement of a nucleic acid molecule of SEQ ID NO: 7; and. a nucleotide sequence encoding a fragment of a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 8, wherein the fragment contains at least 15 continuous amino acids of SEQ ID NO: 8, or a complement thereof; or f. a nucleotide sequence encoding an allelic variant which occurs naturally in a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 8, wherein the nucleic acid molecule hybridizes to a nucleic acid molecule comprising SEQ ID NO: 7, or a complement thereof, under stringent conditions.
