A method for determining the validity of interferon treatment in an HCV infected individual, the method comprising determining the nucleotide identity of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the promoter region of the MxA gene in a sample of the individual, corresponding position of the polymorphism with position 455 of SEQ ID No. 1, the presence of thymine being in said position indicative of the validity of the treatment and the presence of a nucleotide other than thymine in said position indicative of the invalidity of the treatment.
