The invention relates to the administration of low doses of IGF-I in ageing, owing to the neuroprotective, antioxidant and anabolic effects thereof and to the use of same in the preparation of products having a neuroprotective, antioxidant and anabolic effect. The invention is particularly suitable for mammals including humans. Compensatory or replacement treatment with IGF-I increases concentrations of free testosterone and normalises total antioxidant capacity in serum as well as the degree of lipid peroxidation and the specific activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the cerebral cortex and in the hippocampus. The administration of IGF-I also produces beneficial effects in the liver in respect of lipid peroxidation, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the mitochondrial function in general.
