The present invention relates to a process for increasing the strength of ceramics by introducing residual stress into the surface of a ceramic by machining the surface of the ceramic -said machining being selected from the group consisting of shot peening and/or grinding- to ceramics treated by means of the process, and to the use of said ceramics.
