Transfecting cells comprises adding magnetic beads (I) to intact cells, where (I) have a glass or polymer coating with surface groups permitting nonspecific binding of cells to the surface. An independent claim is also included for isolating nucleic acids from cellular material by adding (I) to intact cells and lysing the cells after binding and optionally after transfection.
