A method for testing the emergency stop of an elevator comprises the first step of attaching a resin tube (50) to the position of a rope (15) at a position on which the rope (15) is not in contact with a sheave (11a), the second step of lowering a cage (3) in such a manner that the rope (15) to which the tube (50) is attached is moved to the contact surface of the sheave (11a) and the rope (15), the third step of setting the traction capacity of the sheave (11a) to the rope (15) to be smaller than that in the time of the normal operation of the elevator and testing an emergency stop device (30), and the fourth step of removing the tube (50) from the rope (15) at a position on which the rope (15) is not in contact with the sheave (11a). The first to third steps are sequentially performed.
