A methylotrophic bacterium is provided to reduce the toxicity of cadmium in tomatoes and to promote the growth of plants. A methylotrophic bacterium is used to reduce the toxicity of cadmium and to promote the growth of plants. Preferably the methylotrophic bacterium is Methylobacterium oryzae sp. nov. (KACC 11585). Preferably the Methylobacterium oryzae sp. nov. is separated from the stem of rice and is a novel microorganism capable of producing ACC deaminase.
