A side air bag with a curtain extending partly along the roof frame in which the curtain is folded prior to inflation in the direction of its upper zone fixed on the roof frame, and with inflation unfolds like a curtain in front of the side window of the vehicle. A extension (25) prior to folding of the curtain in front of the curtain (19) is wrapped around the curtain, and in the region of its free end is joined to the curtain, such that during inflation of the curtain the extension (25) is released for unfolding.
