The system (30) has batteries (2, 3) and a generator (4). On-board power supply units are operated with different high voltages and loads (6.1, 6.2). A device connects the loads provided for the low on-board voltage alternately with one of the batteries in such a manner that a uniform load of the batteries is obtained. A change-over switch (10.1), switches (10.2, 10.3) and a controller (9) are provided. The controller controls the switching conditions of switching units of the change-over switch and the switches. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a power supply system for a motor vehicle.
