The method involves providing a test specimen (10) that is manufactured from a material to be evaluated and mechanically exciting the test specimen with a frequency greater than or equal to 5 kilo hertz in a cyclic manner. Deformation-induced, micro-structural changes in the material of the test specimen are detected during a predetermined measurement period. The test specimen is provided as a cylindrical body with a cylindrical axis, where the mechanical excitation of the test specimen is effectuated as a translation excitation in the direction of the cylindrical axis. An independent claim is also included for a testing device for evaluating a fatigue characteristic of a material of a test specimen.
