The method involves determining cylinder-individual segment times of a crankshaft in each of two cylinders. An unequal distribution of an air/fuel ratio is detected before combustion processes in combustion chambers, depending on comparison of the determined times. A determination is made while comparing a segment time difference between the times. The unequal distribution of the air/fuel ratio is detected, when the difference is larger than a preset threshold value. A combustion misfire is detected, when the difference is larger than another preset value that is larger than the former value. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine.
