The method involves determining whether a restraining medium i.e. air bag, is released or not, based on a time-dependent acceleration signal of an acceleration sensor of a vehicle and a weighted time-dependent relative velocity between the vehicle and an object. A time-dependent speed change is determined by summation of values of time-dependent acceleration signal. A time-dependent product signal is acquired from the time-dependent speed change by multiplying with the time-dependent weighted relative velocity.
