The device has a tool e.g. face cutter (3), with a blade (4) for removal of material from an inner side (5) of an interior-trim part (1) of a vehicle. A distance sensor i.e. laser scanner (6), outputs distance signals, where a distance (C) between the distance sensor and the blade is known. A control device (8) adjusts a position of the blade relative to the interior-trim part depending on the signals. The distance sensor is designed for direct detection of a distance (A) between an outer side (10) lying opposite to the inner side of the interior-trim part, and the distance sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for designing a groove of an airbag cover in an interior-trim part of a vehicle.
