The starting system (10) has a starter (9) with an electric starter motor (11) which is driven particularly by a gear (38) of a starter pinion (13). A return spring (28) of an engaging device (12) engages the starter pinion with an idle internal combustion engine (15). The starter pinion is engaged in a crown gear (14) of the internal combustion engine. A pneumatic control element (21) disengages the starter pinion with the running internal combustion engine. The starter pinion is disengaged from the crown gear against the force of the return spring.
