The method involves detecting a load parameter, which indicates torque of an internal combustion engine (10). Wear parameters e.g. number of cold start processes, reclined drift, internal combustion engine temperature and ambient air temperature, which influence wear at the engine, are detected. A charge motion valve (31) is controlled based on the load parameter and the wear parameters, which influence dilution of a lubricant e.g. engine oil, of the engine with fuel. A quotient of the number of cold start processes and reclined drift is processed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising instructions to perform a method for operating an internal combustion engine (2) a controller for an internal combustion engine.
