The method involves providing a fuel measurement system and/or a fuel supply pipe with a sensor for determining water content in a fuel. Fuel measurement is specified by a lambda regulation. A water content value in the fuel and a lambda value are determined in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine, and are used as a conductance value for fuel measurement in different operating phases of the engine. The water content value and the lambda value are weighted and/or the water content value is checked and corrected depending on the operating phases. The operating phase is selected from a group consists of ignition phase, warming-up phase, breakout phase or continuous-running operation phase.
