The method involves overlaying nitrogen cover gas on fuel (42) i.e. diesel, in a fuel tank (6). The cover gas is separated from ambient air or from combustion exhaust gases released by an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine, using energy from combustion of the fuel, during operation of the engine that is energized by the fuel. The cover gas is separated from the exhaust gases by gas separation at a micro-porous membrane (24). The separated cover gas is cooled, introduced into the fuel tank, and made to pass via the fuel. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle with a fuel tank.
