The system has devices for adjusting liquid i.e. water, mass flow and air mass flow through a liquid-air heat exchanger, respectively. An operating parameter of each device is adjusted based on required cooling performance of the heat exchanger by a controller. The controller is designed to determine the operating parameter from a group of operating parameters under consideration of a measurement parameter e.g. liquid temperature, influencing an operating condition of a motor vehicle i.e. lorry, so as to lead to minimum fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine. The measurement parameter is considered as one of number of revolutions of the internal-combustion engine, load of the internal-combustion engine, speed of a motor vehicle and external temperature of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a controller of a cooling system for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
