The method involves extruding a strand with inflow and exit channels (21, 23) that run parallel to each other such that the channels are separated from each other by groups of porous filter walls (20). The groups radially run in blind channels, and the extruded strand is trimmed to a molded blank, which is dried. The inflow and exit channels are respectively closed at exit and inflow surfaces (19, 17) of the blank. The blank is sintered to a filter element (9) of a soot filter (1), whose covering surface is sharpened. The filter element is gas-tightly inserted in a housing (7) of the filter. An independent claim is also included for a soot filter having a filter element and a housing.
