The device has a Fresnel lens (10) for focusing sunlight on a thin reflecting layer (11), where the focused sunlight produces a gas pin hole (12). A part of the sunlight enters into a cavity (13) through the gas pin hole, and the reflecting layer is created such that a position of the produced gas pin hole is changed, when the focus of the sunlight is changed. The cavity has a reflecting wall (14) and a solar element (15), and the reflecting layer is a reflecting fluid e.g. mercury, between two solid layers, where the reflecting layer has a thickness of 0.2 millimeters. An independent claim is also included for a method for collecting sunlight.
