The method involves determining parameters (17) characterizing a reference pump capacity (15) of a fuel pump (9), by a condition of an internal combustion engine (3), where the parameters contain a driver desire fuel quantity (85) or a position of a gas pedal. The reference pump capacity is converted into reference speed (19) of the pump from a speed pump capacity volume flow characteristic diagram (21) of the pump. An actual speed of the pump is adjusted depending on the calculated reference speed. The actual speed of an electric motor (27) is adjusted for driving the pump. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for supply of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle with a fuel.
