The gas generator has a gas generator housing, in which a chamber (6) for receiving a propellant (7) for igniting a main gas set in another chamber (9). An ignition device (3) is provided for the ignition of the propellant. The former chamber for receiving the propellant is limited by a pipe (4), on an end (5) of which the ignition device is arranged. Another end (8) reaches the gas generator housing approximately. Both the chambers are separated from each other such that no components of the propellant reach the latter chamber via another end of the pipe before the ignition of the propellant. An independent claim is included for a vehicle occupant restraint system with a gas bag module that has a gas generator.
