The system (10) has an afterburner (20) for completely oxidizing fuel i.e. diesel, present in an exhaust gas of multiple fuel cells (18) i.e. solid oxide fuel cell, in normal operation. The afterburner partly oxidizes additional fuel to occasionally preheat an internal combustion engine (32) of a vehicle and/or to permanently supply heat energy to the combustion engine to start the combustion engine. The afterburner comprises a fuel supply device (22) for supplying additional fuel. The afterburner obtains a thermal output between 5 kilowatt and 15 kilowatt.
