The device (1) has an inhomogeneous light source (2) provided with monochromatic LED with partially textured layer. A wavelength converting element (3) is arranged in the direction of the light emitted by the inhomogeneous light source. The wavelength converting element exhibits an inhomogeneous distribution of a luminescent material. The inhomogeneous light source and the wavelength converting element are positioned in relation to each other such that pre-defined optical characteristics of the light are achieved by the device. An independent claim is also included for a method for providing a light emitting device with pre-defined optical characteristics of the emitted light.
