The sensor (10) has a sensor unit (15) producing a sensor signal that corresponds to a movement path of a moving unit (29) i.e. gear wheel. An evaluation unit (16) determines an absolute angle from the sensor signal. The moving unit (29) and another moving unit (30) i.e. gear wheel, are put in different movement paths during the rotation of a steering shaft (4) in such a manner that a continuous larger path displacement results between the two moving units, where an absolute angular position of the shaft is determined from the path displacement.
