The exhaust system comprises a particulate filter (34) having machined grooves in the upstream surface. The upstream end of the particulate filter receives exhaust from an engine (12) and filters particulates from the exhaust. A grid of electrically resistive material which is inserted into the machined grooves of the exterior upstream surface of the particulate filter, selectively heats the exhaust passing through the grid to initiate combustion of the particulates within the particulate filter.
