An exhaust system has a particulate filter (PF) (34) that filters particulates from exhaust and with an upstream end that receives exhaust from an engine; a grid (64) of electrically resistive material e.g. stainless steel that selectively heats exhaust passing through the upstream end to initiate combustion of particulates within the PF; and a hydrocarbon adsorbent coating (72) applied at first density in first subsection or at second density in second subsection of PF and that releases hydrocarbons into exhaust to increase the temperature of combustion of particulates within the PF. An independent claim is included for a method of regenerating the PF of an exhaust system.
