The method involves detecting environment of a vehicle (1) using image detection units (2.1, 2.2) i.e. unidirectional cameras. An overall image (G) is produced from detected single images (E), and is displayed by a display unit (2.4), where the overall image shows a bird's eye view of vehicle environment. The vehicle is positioned in the overall image depending on situation. Relevant surrounding regions (U1, U2) are determined and displayed based on distance (A1, A2, A3) between vehicle and obstacle for vehicle driving condition, where the distance is detected by a distance sensor system (3). An independent claim is also included for a vehicle environment monitoring device comprising a display unit.
