The system includes a lift cage assembly (2) for travel within a lift shaft (3), a cable (7) connected to the cage assembly at the lower region of the system for interconnecting the cage assembly with a counterweight (8). A motor (4) for driving the cable is positioned in the roof of the lift shaft so as to be laterally adjacent to the lift assembly when the assembly is at top floor serviced by the system.
