The method involves regulating or controlling the appropriate driving speed in dependence of a driving speed of foreign vehicles (2,3,4) which are detected in driving direction (R) behind a vehicle (1) or laterally to the vehicle. The appropriate driving speed is regulated or controlled such that an overhauling or breaking-in foreign vehicle is merged timely to a traffic lane with limited length in an appropriate traffic lane (F1).
