An absorbable, protective coatings for wounds with the use of cellulose sponges and a process for preparation thereof

Absorbable protective coatings for wound which are excellent in absorbability and liquid-holding properties, have elevated shape-retention properties and strength and improved working properties, and can promote hemostatic and therapeutic effects at the wound site. These coatings are produced by solidifying by heating a stock sponge solution comprising viscose and crystalline mirabilite as the main components and being free from any reinforcing agent or containing a natural fiber as a reinforcing agent, molding it to give a thickness somewhat larger than the desired level; compressing the same to give a sheet of the desired thickness; if needed, carboxymethylating hydroxyl in the glucose unit constituting the cellulose sponge to give a degree of substitution of from 0.5 up to 1.0; and notching.
