PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly pure spiroglycol (3,9-bis(1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro-[5.5]-undecane) having an improved diameter.;SOLUTION: This method for producing the highly pure spiroglycol, comprising reacting pentaerythritol with hydroxypivalaldehyde in the presence of an acid as a catalyst in water solvent, is characterized by satisfying the following (A) to (D). (A) The total content of amines and amine salts in the hydroxypivalaldehyde of raw material is ≤1.5 wt.%. (B) Seed crystals are added in an amount of 1.5 to 30 wt.% based on the total amount (raw material, solvent, catalyst and seed crystal) supplied to the reaction system to the seed crystals. (C) The pH value of the reaction solution during the reaction is in a range of 0.1 to 4.0. (D) The total of the maximum amount (theoretical amount) of the spiroglycol synthesized from the pentaerythritol and the hydroxypivalaldehyde and the amount of the spiroglycol in the seed crystals supplied to the reaction system is in a range of 5 to 35 wt.% based on the total amount of materials supplied to the reaction system.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
