The method involves estimating instantaneous soot mass of a particle filter from a model comprising correspondence between the instantaneous soot mass and a given fuel injection set point. The estimated soot mass is stored, and the estimation and storage steps are repeated. Total soot mass is calculated by integrating instantaneous estimation, and the filter is regenerated when the total soot mass attains a threshold value. Quantity of the injected fuel is estimated based on the injection set point, and the soot mass is estimated from the estimation of the injected fuel quantity.
