The method involves injecting cleaning gas in a refrigeration circuit of a cooling unit i.e. natural gas liquefaction unit. A filling gas comprising ethane is injected in the circuit, and another filling gas comprising methane is injected in the circuit, and an average molar mass of the former filling gas is higher than that of the latter filling gas. The cleaning gas and the latter filling gas are deacidified and dried natural gas. An additional filling gas comprising dinitrogen, propane, isobutane, n-butane, isopentane, n-pentane, ethylene or propylene, is injected in the circuit. An independent claim is also included for a method for liquefying natural gas in a cooling unit.
