The apparatus has an electronic control unit (2) determining deposit state of particles deposited on a particle filter (8) based on a value obtained by correcting a physical unit measured by a pressure difference sensor (10) through an acquisition value of quantity of deposit of ashes stored in the control unit. The control unit determines that whether the acquisition value stored by the unit is reinitialized or not. The control unit stops the determination of the deposit state of the particles until acquisition is carried out for a number of times when the acquisition value is reinitialized. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a deposition state of particles for making a determination concerning deposition state of particles deposited on a particle filter provided in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine.
